Interpersonal Skills for the Workplace

Interpersonal Skills for the Workplace is an applied course for professionals who need to communicate clearly, collaborate across difference, handle tension, and build reliable working relationships. It combines explanation, corporate cases, guided practice, reflection, and evidence-based transfer tasks.

The course treats interpersonal skill as a form of workplace infrastructure. Learners examine how attention, emotion, language, power, feedback, decision design, inclusion, influence, digital channels, boundaries, and ethical judgment shape work outcomes. Each unit moves from a concept to a realistic corporate case and then to a repeatable practice. The workbook is designed for facilitated delivery, blended learning, or self-directed study. It does not ask learners to adopt a single personality style. Instead, it develops a repertoire of choices that can be adapted to role, culture, disability, hierarchy, time zone, and risk. The final module turns learning into a portfolio and a 30/60/90-day plan so that interpersonal improvement is observable and sustainable.

What You Will Learn In This Course

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:
1 Distinguish intention, observable behaviour, impact, assumption, and work consequence in an interpersonal event.
2 Regulate an immediate response and select a communication channel, pace, and tone proportionate to the context.
3 Listen for content, emotion, evidence, interests, and requests, then verify understanding through paraphrase and focused questions.
4 Write and speak clear requests, boundaries, explanations, handoffs, feedback, and decisions that make ownership and timing visible.
5 Give, receive, and apply feedback; coach when appropriate; and conduct fair developmental performance conversations.
6 Design meetings, team agreements, roles, participation methods, decisions, and accountability processes that support collaboration.
7 Diagnose conflict, negotiate trade-offs, de-escalate respectfully, and recognise when formal escalation or specialist support is required.
8 Interrupt exclusion, improve accessibility, invite dissent, and use power responsibly to strengthen psychological safety and equity.
9 Influence stakeholders without relying on hierarchy by mapping interests, framing value, building trust, and closing loops.
10 Adapt relational practice to email, chat, video, asynchronous, hybrid, and confidential work environments.
11 Protect capacity, wellbeing, confidentiality, and ethical standards while communicating under pressure or uncertainty.
